Black Ops 7 Beta Finally Tackles Skill-Based Matchmaking with New “Open Moshpit” Playlist

Treyarch Responds to SBMM Feedback

After years of community debate, Treyarch is finally addressing skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) with the launch of Open Moshpit in the Black Ops 7 beta.

Announced on October 4, 2025, Open Moshpit is a new multiplayer playlist where, according to Treyarch, “skill consideration is drastically reduced” when forming matches. This move aims to bring back the spontaneity and casual fun that many fans feel recent Call of Duty titles have lacked.

Why Skill-Based Matchmaking Has Been Controversial

SBMM has existed in Call of Duty since 2007’s Modern Warfare, but over the years it has evolved into a highly fine-tuned system that tightly controls lobby balance. While this ensures fairer matches, it has also made it rare for players to encounter opponents far above or below their skill level.

For high-skill players, this can make the game feel relentlessly competitive — eliminating the sense of unpredictability and casual enjoyment that once defined multiplayer sessions.

What to Expect from the Open Moshpit Playlist

According to the official Black Ops 7 beta patch notes, Open Moshpit is designed to “provide more varied match experiences and outcomes” by reducing SBMM influence during matchmaking.

Both Moshpit and Open Moshpit are currently available in the beta and share the same map and mode pool.

Available Maps

  • Impring

  • Cortex

  • Exposure

  • The Forge

Available Modes

  • Team Deathmatch

  • Domination

  • Hardpoint

  • Kill Confirmed

  • Overload

  • Search and Destroy

As with all beta features, these playlists and matchmaking systems may change before the game’s full release in November 2025.
